Steel Lounge Underground April
Expressions in Print & Vinyl…
DJ Pooks (Flight 713, Sideways, Soular Grooves) and Josh Zulu (Soular Grooves) host the next edition of “Steel Lounge Underground” this Friday night, April 25th (and the last Friday of every month) at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (5126 Montrose, 77006) from 8p-11p. This month’s musical line-up features Austin’s legendary turntablist DJ Mel (Beauty Bar, Nasty’s, Rock the Casbah, Swoll) plus Jeffery Mac (Manifesto) and Suma (Rebel Crew, Soular Grooves). Mel absolutely tore the roof off of the CAMH last November and we are incredibly excited to welcome him back to Houston! After-party immediately following at The Flat (1701 Commonwealth, 77006). Both events are absolutely free of charge!
- 8-9 : Jeffery Mac
- 9-10 : Suma
- 10-11 : DJ Mel
Steel Lounge Underground is creating a movement in Houston that identifies music as art through an environment that brings musical and visual art and artists together. Musical artists (DJs) are encouraged to produce their most creative and profound performances within a visual environment that is synergistic with their particular music style. Ultimately this event is both entertaining and inspiring - resulting in the audience leaving inspired to do something creative!

On display in the Zilkha Gallery of the museum: Perspectives 160: Dawoud Bey
Since 1992, Chicago-based photographer Dawoud Bey has been working exclusively on large-scale portraits of American teenagers. These photographs reveal the individual character of members of this age group. In his recent work Bey, made in high schools around the country, Bey has included texts that the subjects have written about themsleves. For Bey, the creation and presentation of these portraits and texts allows for a more complex and nuanced representation than the photographic portrait alone. Perspectives 160: Dawoud Bey marks the artist’s debut at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, where Bey will collaborate with the Museum’s Teen Council.

With her signature laugh she has lived a fearless life, daring all who challenged her to step up. Yeah great, there are lots of girl DJs, so what?
